The Journey

An overview of the Journey tab for staff

Updated this week

The Journey tab on a child's profile is where all assessments and observations for a child are displayed in chronological order.

Making Observations

Observations record development, interests, experiences, and achievements, creating a full picture of each child in your care. To create an observation:

  1. Go to the child’s Journey tab on their profile

  2. Click New in the top right

  3. From the drop-down menu, select Observation

  4. Write the observation and optionally upload a photo, video, or document

Making Assessments

Assessments are ongoing through observations, but summative assessments can also be recorded to create a snapshot of a child’s current development. To make an assessment:

  1. Go to the child’s Journey tab on their profile

  2. Click New in the top right

  3. From the drop-down menu, select Assessment

Please note, assessments cannot be created on Famly Free.

Downloading a Child’s Journey

When children leave your setting, parents can still access their child’s profile and photos as long as their role in the app has not been revoked. You do not need to download or print anything, but parents sometimes like to keep a personal copy.

Parents can download their child’s journey themselves from the Journey tab. If this option is disabled and parents request a copy:

  1. Go to the child’s profile and click Journey

  2. Click Print and select Print all

  3. Enter the date range to download and click Print

  4. Choose Save as PDF as the destination in your browser’s print preferences

  5. Click Save to download the file, which can then be attached to an email to the parent

If a child’s journey has too many entries to download at once, use the date picker to split it into smaller sections. Each download will include observations and assessments within the selected period.

💡 Printing or downloading a child’s journey is only available on a computer or laptop. Tablets and smartphones do not support this functionality.

Individual observations can also be printed by clicking ••• on the observation and selecting Print, then following the steps above

Draft observations and assessments cannot be printed. Only published items can be printed from the Child Development Overview or the child’s Journey tab.

Controlling Parent Access

To allow or prevent parents from downloading or printing their child’s journey:

  1. Go to Settings

  2. Click Child Development and select Parent Options

  3. Toggle Allow parents to download or print their children’s learning journey on or off

This provides full control over what parents can access.
