How to Enable the Updated Scottish Child Development

What is the New Child Development?

The new Child Development setup has moved away from tracking. Instead, the reference material will appear to the right of the screen when writing and observation so that it can be referred to in the written portion of the observation.

To add flexibility, the new custom assessment builder does allow you to add tracking options to your own assessments. With this feature, you'll now be able to decide exactly what will appear in your assessments, and how they'll look. You can use this exclusively or in combination with the default assessment options. Read more about assessments here.

Reporting

You can now view your past tracking, as well as reports based on assessments made in any new configurations. These will show the current best-fit judgments you’ve made on every child, and just like now, you’ll be able to click on a tile to see that child’s past assessments within that area. The new system is designed to show you those children you really need to focus on, rather than about filling it out so you know exactly where every child is.

However, because you can no longer link to specific curriculum statements, you will no longer have statement-based tracking as an option in your progress report, or on the child's journey (but we will have something soon in its place).

Enabling the New Child Development

To access the latest version of child development for Scotland you'll need to first switch to the new child development option, and then enable your specific leanring frameworks and reference material.

The updated child development can be toggled on by going to Settings → Child Development → Setup. We suggest first enabling it just for yourself. This gives you a chance to play around and get comfortable. Once you feel ready you can activate it for your whole setting.

Toggling on Your Frameworks

Once you've been moved over to the new child development you can enable the correct frameworks under Settings → Child Development → Learning Frameworks.

Then turn on your reference material by looking at the Reference Material under Child Development in Settings.

Once you've enabled your reference material you will see this on the right-hand side when going to write an observation.

Remember that you'll need to have toggled on these frameworks in both the Learning Frameworks and the Reference Material sections of Settings in order to carry out your child development functions as normal.

Please note that the new child development no longer involves linking to the frameworks. Instead, staff should use the reference material as a guide, placing focus on the written portion of the observation to state key moments in development for a child. The goal here is to move further towards a child-centred practice.

We are open to feedback about improving our child development! If you have suggestions please write to us at support@famly.co
