What is Two-factor Authentication?

Two-factor authentication adds an extra layer of security to your login. It means signing in takes two steps:

  1. Your email and password, and

  2. A code generated by an authenticator app

All parents and any additional contacts on a child's profile can enable two-factor authentication.

How to Set up Two-factor Authentication

To set up two-factor authentication, follow the steps below:

👉 First, you will need to download an authenticator app, such as Google Authenticator, for Apple devices or Android devices. This is free to download and use

It is easier to complete the next part of this process on a desktop computer or laptop, with the device you want to use for two-factor authentication handy (such as a tablet or mobile phone).

  • Log in to Famly on your desktop computer or laptop

  • Click on your profile picture in the bottom left corner and go to Account preferences

  • Select Password and PIN

  • Click on Set up two-factor authentication

  • Next, open up the Authenticator app you downloaded onto your smartphone. Tap on the + and then select Scan a QR code

  • Scan the QR code on your desktop computer or laptop with your smartphone

  • You will be redirected to your Authenticator app automatically, where a new code will appear under Famly

  • Back on Famly, enter the code into the Enter authentication code section to finish your setup

💡 These codes update frequently, so make sure you enter them quickly!

  • Click on Activate two-factor authentication

You've now activated two-factor authentication. Next, you’ll be given a set of recovery codes. These can be used if you ever lose access to your phone or can’t get your authentication codes.

You can:

  • Click the print icon to print your codes and store them securely

  • Click the copy icon to save them in a secure password manager

  • Click Download to save them to your device

Once you’ve saved your codes, tick I’ve saved my recovery codes in a safe place to continue.

If you need to use a recovery code to access your Famly account:

  • Click on Having trouble accessing your account? when Famly prompts you to enter your 2-factor code

  • Next, enter one of your recovery codes and click Log in

Regenerating Two-factor Recovery Codes

After activating two-factor authentication, you’ll see the option to Generate recovery codes in your Password and PIN settings.

You should regenerate your codes if you’ve lost the original set or want to refresh them.

💡 Generating new codes will invalidate your previous ones, so make sure to save the new set securely before continuing

Disabling Two-factor Authentication

If you no longer wish to use two-factor authentication, you can turn it off at any time.

  1. Log in to Famly using your authenticator

  2. Go to your Password and PIN settings

  3. Select Disable two-factor authentication

  4. Enter your account password to confirm, then click Deactivate 2-factor authentication

Once disabled, you’ll no longer need to enter an authentication code when logging in to Famly.

If You Have Lost Access to Your Two-factor Authenticator App

If you no longer have access to your two-factor authentication app or codes, email support@famly.co from the email address associated with your Famly account. The team will need to verify your identity before they can reset the two-factor authentication on your account for you.

💡 While the support team can reset your two-factor authentication, the verification process can take some time. If you get a new device, it's a good idea to transfer the codes from your old account to your new account before you lose access to them.

To transfer 2FA codes to a new phone, you can use the "Transfer accounts" or "Export accounts" feature within your authenticator app on your old device, which generates a QR code. You then open the same app on your new device, tap "Import accounts" or "Scan QR code," and scan the code from your old phone to transfer your existing codes.

Tips for setting up two-factor authentication

  • Make sure you are looking at the correct authenticator account. You can link codes to multiple email addresses, so switch accounts if you do not see the code.

  • Always set this up on a private device, such as your own smartphone. Do not use shared devices like a nursery tablet or iPad.
