Types of Funding Grants Across the UK

As a nursery manager, understanding the funding grants available for children can help you support families and ensure you're reporting all the financial information at your setting accurately. There are a number of available funding grants across the UK, including:

Free Early Education Entitlement (FEEE)

England:

  • 15 Hours Free Childcare is available for all 3- and 4-year-olds, covering 15 hours per week during term time (38 weeks)

  • 30 Hours Free Childcare is available for working parents of 3- and 4-year-olds who meet income criteria, providing 30 hours per week

  • 15 Hours for Disadvantaged 2-Year-Olds is available for families on certain benefits or children with additional needs

Scotland, Wales & Northern Ireland:

  • Scotland offers 1,140 hours per year for all 3- and 4-year-olds and eligible 2-year-olds

  • Wales offers the Flying Start Programme for some 2-year-olds; 30 hours funding for 3- and 4-year-olds

  • Northern Ireland offers the Pre-School Education Programme (PSEP), which provides 12.5 hours per week for 3- and 4-year-olds

Local Authority Grants

Some councils offer additional funding for low-income families or children with special educational needs (SEN). It’s worth checking what support is available in your area.

How to Enter Your Funding Grants

Each council manages early years funding differently. Visit your local authority’s website to get specific details about available grants and eligibility criteria. You can find your council’s website via GOV.UK.

Once you've figured out the funding grants available in your area, you can enter these on Famly to make sure your Public funding report shows accurate figures for each child.

To add Funding grants:

  • Click on Setting in your sidebar and scroll down to Finances

  • From here, click on Public funding and select Funding grants

  • Next, click on New to enter a New funding grant

Once you save this funding rate, you'll be able to link it to a child's booking plan to show you the total amount you can expect to receive from your council for that child.
