Taking and sharing photos of children in your care comes with important responsibilities. As a site manager, you need to be aware of child protection and safeguarding concerns, as well as data protection requirements, whenever photos are captured or shared. This guide outlines best practices for managing photos safely and communicating expectations to parents.
Guidelines and Policies
Photos shared on social media can reveal personal, identifiable information about children. These risks can be mitigated by having clear guidelines or a policy in place covering:
How photos of children are taken within your setting
How parents are allowed to use and share these photos
We recommend that this policy is communicated clearly to all parents and guardians. This is particularly important if parents can download photos from the site's Newsfeed using Famly’s download functionality. Your policy should explicitly state that parents should not publicly share photos containing other children without obtaining consent from their parents or guardians.
💡 It’s important to note that there are ways for parents to capture photos outside of Famly’s controls, such as screenshots or downloads via a web browser. Because of this, having a clear policy that parents understand is essential to safeguarding all children
Downloading Photos from the Newsfeed
To allow parents to download photos from your Newsfeed:
Go to Settings in your sidebar
Head to Communication → Newsfeed
Find the Photo downloading section and toggle the feature on
By default, photo downloads are switched off, so parents will not see the option until a manager enables it.
